26.11.-10.12.16: Without You, (Who) Am I? – Nelson Schaub & Monika Emmanuelle

“Without you, (who) am I?” is a double exhibition starts on the 26th of November with Nelson Schaub, merges both artists’ work on the 3rd of December, and ends with Monika Emmanuelle’s installation on the 10th of December.

In his work, Nelson Schaub thematises escapism, which, in adolescence, often leads into a world of celebrities and pop stars. His own body is always present, though it merely serves as a representation of social conventions on screen. By superposing pictures of himself and of female pop stars, he appropriates their common imagery depiction and assumes the role of the teenager who uses pop songs as an expression of his or her own emotional state and desires.
Evidently detached from physical borders and measures of body changes, his body becomes a virtualisation of extracted self-expression.

In contrast to the virtual changes that Nelson Schaub undergoes on his own body, Monika Emmanuelle focuses on her physical body and the process of healing issues that she’s experienced.
She addresses the body in its relationship with its immediate surroundings, and with nature. These topics stem from her pre-education in Interior Design and her path to physical health, as the only treatment that has helped her to improve her lung condition was plant-based medicine.

In an installation, she combines replications of her own organs with common decorative plants, through which they become an integral part of her body cycle.

Nelson Schaub (*1995, Bex) and Monika Emmanuelle (*1991, Paris) are both currently studying Visual Arts at HEAD Geneva.
